Brexit

Dear Brits,

so you decided to leave. What a shame. I really liked you. And I am so sorry that you will have to face all the things that will happen now on your own, alone. The first wave of repercussions is already washing over us all: Dropping stocks and general confusion, even angst about the future.

I won't deny it, I would have preferred you to stayed. I like your Englishness and your Queen, I like the way you put a U behind the odd O, unlike those Americans ;-) , and I like the Scots and Welsh, too, and the Irish, even those that live up in the north of their island. (Actually I like most people, because, well, that's the decent thing to do, I think.)

There are so many things about you I am going to miss: I like shopping at your stores via the internet, I like visiting London without a visa or too much of a hassle at the border. Stonehenge, Mt. Snowdown, you name it... Your attitude towards life... I like your TV shows and your Pi(e)s. I like Fish & Chips, and I like that you dare to put vinegar on top of that! I like a lot about you, dear Brits.

You have been a great addition to the EU for so many years. And, as always when a marriage goes bad there isn't just one side to blame. We all made mistakes. Maybe we didn't listen enough to what you had to say, although to us it seems we listened quite a lot. Maybe we were to involved with our own petty problems that we didn't realize what was going on with you.

And now it is to late. Things are broken and people got hurt.

I wish you all the luck. Maybe the Scottish won't leave you as you left us. Maybe what you have here is an opportunity for growth. Maybe this day does not mark the end of the United Kingdom as we know it, but the beginning of something bigger.

...and maybe it is a chance for the rest of us who want to get serious about an even closer relation with our European partners, a thing you never seemed to like that much. ...if we can get rid of those fear-mongers that try to destroy our liberal society before it is too late, that is. You see, we have problems, too.

Well. Nobody knows what the future holds. Be brave. I will miss you. And I hope that some day you will miss us, too, just a tiny little bit.

Yours

jb
