The Day Sir Terry Died

"But there's still such a lot to be done..."
Yes. There always is.

Small Gods
Terry Pratchett

The first book by Sir Terry Pratchett I ever read was Small Gods, I got it from my cousin, who lend it to me during one of my many summer vacations in Denmark. Bad weather, as always. When he gave it to me he said that it was something very special, and so I read it, although it was a German translation of a book by an English author. (I've always preferred the originals.)

Given that back then I was at that impressionable age of 16 or so, it blew my mind. Finally someone who understands how the human mind works and expresses it in a way that is both funny and tragic at the same time.

And then I forgot all about it. Things move fast when you are young and there is always something new, every single day.

Years later I found my soul mate, and guess what, she had all of the Discworld novels up on her board - well, not all of them, but a lot. And I remembered how I felt back then when I was that child. So I read them all, and the ones that were missing, we got from the book store or that evil corporation with the big A in it's name. A friend from university took us to a reading/Q&A session when Mr. Pratchett came to Germany and I got my copy of Small Gods autographed.

Many books followed. Some were brilliant, some were just good. And we read them all.

And now, there will be no more books. That is so sad that the word "sad" doesn't even begin to cover it.
